This web site is a retrospect of my work. Like it or not...these images are crazy and fun. No redeeming value what so ever besides pure entertainment. Very few social comments, just skulls, demons, toons, zombies and robot chicks with big equipment! Some commercial art projects, some of it just for me. I hope you enjoy them and your stay at Hard Grafixs©!

The Sell.

Add a quart of early punk and metal music, 2 liters 80's Heavy Metal Magazine, 1/2 a pound of Rat Fink , Pushead, Spain's Mortedelo y Filemon and 1/5 of Hammer Studio flicks and you get Miguel Heredia's Hard Grafixs. Don't be alarmed of the frantic detailing (never enough!) and the subject matter, it's not real...see it's a drawing...from my imagination, a still frame of something fantastic and fun. I am a working artist in every sense of the word, you can find my work on t-shirts, television, print, web sites, music and even living room walls.

A Litte History.

Miguel Heredia is a Brooklyn born artist, New York City native who studied illustration & cartooning at both The High School of Art & Design and The School of Visuals Arts. As a self professed Gen X'er he applied his generations D.I.Y. ethic into becoming a well know artist in the downtown New York City music and alternative scene. From intricate window displays for such legendary shops as Tower Records, Cheap Jacks and several others, to working with bands, labels and record distributors, for poster, CD, LP and compilation art. Miguel was also a core member of Site 51, an artist collective established in the early 90's to promote up and coming underground artists from the NYC scene. Site 51 had over 15 shows all over New York, from clubs to galleries. These shows would sometimes include over 30 artist, plus music and entertainment. Miguel established himself as a "Tour de Force" of the Site 51 movement as the lead in organizing and promoting their run of shows at the legendary Webster Hall.

Mr. Heredia's art also made it into the national small press, semi-professional and 'zine market. Working on diverse subjects as horror, single panel cartoons, editorial, tattoo and gaming publications.

Miguel continues to work with bands, labels, publications and web sites as over the years he has also become a sought after multi-media designer ultimately garnering respect from folks like the Garden State Horror Writers ( featured artist and panel speaker ), broadcast design industry ( CNN, Court TV ,Tru TV, 2009 BDA award team ), W Hotels Backstage Fashion Week 2005 ( featured illustrator ) and several others.

Nice things good people have said about me.

Miguel Heredia is one of those rare finds thats flows from the dark of the unknown to surprise and delight. We were lucky enough to catch the scent of him in the wind, When we visited his den of design, we were amazed at the multitude of exquisite creations from this prolific illustrator. The bold and expressive strokes with which he captures monsters of mythical proportions burn into the mind. Somewhere, within his human frame, is contained a beast yearning for freedom. Until its escape from the fragile condition of confinement, the pen is it's outlet."

Miguel Heredia Interview @ Cthulhu S, Magazine # 18. (1999)

Miguel Heredia brings his supernatural expertise to bare in our centerfold section. His particular skill at creating monstrous creatures comes alive in these pages as he takes us on a romp through his unique world. He has the ability to capture his creatures to such detail that, if you listen carefully, you might be able to hear their creaking, groaning and slurping. His strong strokes are deftly created with such confidence that it suggests he pinions these awesome inspiring monstrosities in poses for his use. With such a dreadful collection at his command, he is a force to be reckoned with. Let his works touch you with their imagery and pray that you never meet them face to face. In order to understand a bit more of this fascinating artist, we asked him to present a few words about himself. As you delve into his dark mind, remember, this is only what he wants you to know...

I was born in East New York, Brooklyn in 1969. A peculiar child, I always had strange imagery in my head of hidden creatures that lurked in the dark. In 1979, at the age of nine, I was sent to Barcelona, Spain, where I lived with my half Gypsy grandparents until the tender age of 13. Being of Gypsy blood, they many ghost and supernatural stories to keep my brain working well into the middle of the night. I have always been drawing-since my earliest memory. I didn't like to play with other kids, I only wanted to draw. I was highly impressed with the amount and style of art they had in Europe. They had great comic books that mostly dealt with horror and mysteries, not a lot of superhero stuff like the American comics.

Upon my return from Spain, I enrolled in the High School of Art & Design, graduating with a major in illustration. During these years Heavy Metal album covers where my source of inspiration. After that, I attended The School of Visual Arts, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts. During those years, low brow art and the underground alternative scene where also my source of inspiration. After giving mainstream illustration a shot, I decided that it was not fun at all and decided to keep my drawing skills in the scenes and lifestyle that I enjoyed.

I've done work for everything - labels, zines, magazines, bands, clubs, tattoos, art shows, etc...etc...but most of all, I do work for myself. I don't compromise my art anymore (of course, the client is always right!) I do it for the love of it and the sanity and tranquility it brings me. I like to think I'm a 24-hour artist. I play the role of a multimedia designer during the day and a mad scientist artist at night. It couldn't be any more fun.

The last thing I would like to say is that if magazines like Cthulhu Sex weren't around, a lot of extremely talented people wouldn't get their shot at any exposure at all. That's why what St. Michael and Cthulhu Sex does is so important. Like me, I bet he does this with nothing but heart and soul and not many rewards. So we as artist, writers, poets and musicians need to support the work that Cthulhu Sex does with respect and buy the whole crew a drink when you bump into them downtown! Love,

Miguel Heredia - Hard Grafixs

We would like to thank Miguel for his praise and sentiments. Our drink of choice is the blood of a young virgin, warm from the wound. And of course, our true goal isn't the dispersal of high quality artwork and writing from unique and interesting individuals. Our true goal is the conquest and supplication of all living creatures of the planet.

Miguel Heredia Interview @ ROI Designs Magazine. (2001)

What inspired you to do Graphic Design?
Nothing really, I kind of fell into it. I studied illustration and art when I was in college. I figured
as long as I was in the creative field, I could call myself an artist, so I took a chance when the
opportunity arose. I have no formal graphic design training!

2: Do you have your first image you created? Tell us about that.
Nope. I have been drawing since I can remember. I used to draw superhero comics and give the drawings away when I was a kid.

3: Do you have a favorite artist?
I have a lot of favorite artists. For Fine Arts Egon Shielde is one of my favorites. His work is exquisite.
Salvador Dali is also one of my favorites. More Contemporary artist's like Robert Williams, Ralph
Steadman and Francisco Ibanez.

4: Do you have a favorite place on the web? And why?
Yeah, all of my web sites.:). I just love the web ,period. I did a three year stint as a web designer and now find it invaluable when it comes to research and promoting.

5: How did you learn to do what you do?
Like I said, I have been an artist since I was a kid. That's all I ever wanted to be...creative. The graphic
design aspect was learned on the job the hard way. There is nothing like real world experience when it
comes to getting the job done.

6: What was the hardest thing you had to overcome doing Graphic Design?
Being able to listen and not be so artsy fartsy when it comes to clients. When people are looking to sell a product, they don't want art Jargon.

7: If you could teach someone to do what you do, what would be the most important issue and why?
Perseverance, you can be a good artist, but without discipline and sticking to your guns
you will get nowhere. Attitude helps..(good attitude) and self confidence. Remember: your
talented...make other people believe the same.

8: What do you want people to see when they look at your artwork?
Wonder what's going on. Make them think...WTF. Because there's something happening to the piece on the whole...but there's also something happening in the upper right corner or the left side. Not to tell a story, but for people to come away with there own. Let them use their imagination as well.

9: If I gave you a square, tell me what you would do with it within your artwork.
Distort it.:)

10: Does music, moods, environment have a lot to do with your artwork?
For sure! I am an old school punk and metal head...I no longer look the part but it is a heavy influence on me. Also my upbringing in Brooklyn, NY where you can be a part of everything at any given time.
When I  get down to work, my studio is my little world. The walls are plastered with Projects, freelance gigs and sketches. Also images that just tweak me and the music goes from Metal, Punk, Rap, Electronica, techno...etc..etc. Hanging around the right people is also Key, it's always a good thing to be around other creatives to bounce stuff off of.

Thanks for the interview. Keep it up and get what you want. - Miguel Heredia
